Tenant Spotlight: How Rexrob have grown at the Humber Enterprise Park

16th May 2017

Rexrob joined the Humber Enterprise Park as an engineering start-up in November 2014, becoming one of the site’s first tenants. The company’s specialist team of engineers provide precision machining, design and fabrication services, with a goal of ‘implementing your most imaginative ideas and transforming them into a fully functioning reality’.

We spoke to Directors Mike Robinson and Jon Rex about their journey so far.

Mike Robinson (MR): We were one of the 1st businesses to join the HEP - we literally started from nothing, we had no workers, no equipment. In fact, the machines started arriving before we even had the keys. We started trading in the December.

The site now has both a machine shop and fabrication shop, something Rexrob could develop thanks to the Humber Enterprise Park’s low rental rates.

Jon Rex (JR): The unit seemed too big when we first started, but now we’re building a mezzanine level to house our office so we can expand the workshop floor space. We’ve invested around 500K in the machine shop, and we’re now starting to invest more in to the fabrication side of our business.

MR: James (Appleton-Metcalfe, Humber Enterprise Park owner) really looked after us when we were starting up on the site. He’s keen for businesses like ours to come on to the site– start-up’s which are looking to grow and develop.

The Humber Enterprise Park’s Enterprise Zone status has been a key factor in allowing for Rexrob’s accelerated growth, with the company making a significant saving per year thanks to business rates exemption.

MR: We’ve been able to invest the money we’ve saved on business rates back into the business. We’ve gone from just three people to 19 in two years. We’re now at the point we thought initially we would be at in year five or six, and we’ve done that in just two years.

The Brough site’s location just off the motorway network has further benefitted their business.

JR: Being in this location means we’re really well connected. We’re just minutes away from the A63, allowing us to supply to Leeds, Goole and Howden.

The next couple of years are looking set to be just as positive, with Rexrob recently recruiting a new apprentice.

MR: The next big steps for us are to get aircraft accredited which would hopefully open a lot of doors for us. We’re also investing in some new design software and completing our ISO 9001 accreditation.
